Addiction contributes to a large array of family issues including, but not limited to, trust and financial problems. There is an association between successful recovery and social supports and involving family members and significant others in treatment can reduce the risk of harm and/or relapse. SA professionals must consider various family dynamics and work with consumers’ social supports in order to reach new milestones and to foster continued success.

Objectives:
Describe various issues that may be present in the family.
Gain knowledge of the genetic and environmental factors that contribute to substance usage and relapse.
Learn how to promote sensitivity to cultural differences of familial groups being counseled.
Understand the role of child protective services workers and family courts in addiction treatment.
